Elon Musk Deletes Tweet Hinting at Model Y with Falcon Doors

Quote:
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has unofficially revealed the next model for the electric automaker’s lineup.

In a tweet answering whether the Falcon doors will find their way onto a future car, Musk said that 'there will be a Model 3 and a Model Y. One of the two will.' He has since deleted the tweet, but hey, this is the Internet, so the tweet lives on somewhere.

It’s no real surprise that Tesla has a fourth car in the early stages of development, as a crossover variant for the upcoming Model 3 has been rumored in recent months. Musk originally stated that his plan was to name the Tesla vehicles Model S, Model E and Model X, which as an interesting result, spells S-E-X, so naturally, a Model Y fits his naming convention to spell out S-E-X-Y. Because you know, sex sells.

Unfortunately for Musk, the Model E nameplate was abandoned due to Ford’s E Series vans, so the American automaker is settling for 3, which is a suitable substitute for the letter E, at least on the Internet.

As a crossover variant for the entry-level Model 3, it makes sense for the Model Y to get the Falcon doors, much like its bigger brother the Model X. The Tesla Model 3 is expected to go into production in 2017, so don’t expect the Model Y to make a debut for another couple of years.
