Thieves want EV Charging Station Copper...

Look for this to continue as the network expands and incomes continue to depress. Quick hits on copper and cable have been happening for the better part of at least 2 years...

Before you get uppity its not an attack on EV's, they just want the copper.

In Europe, most EV charging stations don't have a wire permanently attached. Unlike North America, European EV drivers need to carry a cable around with them. This is a bit of a hassle, but it's far easier than pulling up to an EVSE and finding the cable simply cut out. That's what's happening to some Level 2 EVSEs in Canada. We have no idea how widespread this problem is – and we note that this isn't the first we've heard about vandals attacking EV charging stations – but vandalizing charging stations sure seems like a needless setback to the EV community.

The author actually does all EV owners a HUGE disservice by calling this an attack on the EV community, when you frame the discussion as such the cause is construed and we're left mired in the symptoms.

Real energy and real incomes are declining, this is the issue. Theft is a symptom...

Having people carry their own wire is probably the best thing to do. Copper is worth a good amount and I see people go as far as going to new home developments and stripping those places of copper, a very bold thing to do.

Indeed, there are some regions that have had to impose caps on the dollar amount of scrap that can be traded in at once. I do think North Americans should begin carrying their own wires as well, it reduces the vulnerability and risk to the owners of these charging stations as well as having owners take responsibility, plus it would reduce the panic of reaching a charging station in desperate need of juice only to see your lifeline has been castrated!

Carrying around your own cable sounds like a pretty good solution to the problem. I do agree that the problem is that people are in desperate enough situations that they are choosing to steal copper from a EV charging station. There will always be criminal people who commit crimes, but most of them don't commit crimes by choice. They have to to survive.
