Tesla Model S Auto Pilot in More Detail

Tesla unveiled its new Auto Pilot system at a Tesla event. The system uses a forward facing camera and 12 sensors that provide a 360-degree view of the surroundings. The sensors can see other cars, read speed limit signs and even change lanes for you with the pressing of your turn signal.

Quote:
The sensors keep track of vehicles around you and the lanes in the road. One section of the course is a low-speed slalom; a handful of S turns in a row. The driver enables cruise control, takes his hands off the wheel, and it seamlessly turns left and right and left again, all at around 25 mph – which it automatically slowed for after recognized the speed sign –without any input from the guy in the driver's seat.
The auto lane changing features works by simply applying the left signal. The sensors know that there are no other cars around, and then the car slowly slips into the left lane without any driver input.

This lane switching feature puts Tesla one step ahead of other auto pilot systems we have seen from the Germans and Japanese.
